Ankara views of fortress

view map

To the right the Kale or fortress on its hill, been there is some form for thousands of years. At the other side one of the many hills filled to the brim with small houses. On hills further from the centre modern apartment buildings are fast appearing, as for looks I prefer the old ones, but I suppose in time all hills will be filled with high-rises. In the centre a dolmus station: small busses serving the city very efficiently.

Hi,

When I went to Kindergarten, over 50 years ago, I walked through the Amsterdam Red light district every school day. I have later worked there after training as a psychologist. So I do find your " unfortunately" rather condescending to a group of people that you obviously do not want to have anything to do with, but who do exist and ... need I go on? Also my Ankara hotel, where I have been a welcome guest for 15 years, is close by where I took this picture. I won't give that up to move into decent circles. I am not certain that I like decent circles that well.

Your "old experience" is intriguing, is that experience in " decent circles" or ... No, that can't be.

Thanks for explaining the old word. In Holland most houses are for profit somehow, be it rent or other wise. Funny how languages differ. Oh, I work in the " not for profit" sector (which is increasingly being taken over by good old " for profit" thinking).

I do not know the new Ankara but from old experience I would say that you have unfortunately selected to take a photo of a part of Ankara that is considered to be too unsalubrious to be mentioned in decent circles. In the old days the valley area below the "Kale=Castle" was called 'Bend Deresi'. It used to be well known as the site of the official brothels in Ankara!! By the way, the Turkish word for a brothel is 'karhabe" which literally means 'house of profit"...

Mr Osseman,
you are right. This is the reality of Ankara. Unfortunetly, this is the guilty of the mayors. These places are in the Ulus District where, once the center of the city between 1920-1950. Ulus has buildings dated back to 1920s and 1930s. They are governmental buildings, hotels, company buildings etc. All these old buildings has a nice style. They are made from large cut stones and has nice decoration. Unfortunately these are hidden among those ugly cottages.

I can imagine you want to show a nice, clean and modern Ankara te the world. I myself won't like it: any city has rich and poor, old and new districts. Ankara has many hills that look like villages in the country, only larger. I would be telling a lie if I followed your instructions.

That brings me to another point: I am not a Turkish civil servant who has to follow orders, I am a private - Dutch - citizen, and I show what I like. If you want to show another picture: you take it and you show it, but don't tell me what to do or not do.

I also think you write as if you don't care for the people of Afghanistan: let them have their ruins, we in Ankarsa have the great karum, kizilay and so on. I would feel terribly offended if I were from Afghanistan.

I hope you will think a bit about this, for I will not change my pictures. As a matter of fact, rather than show all the nice places you mention I would close me site, for I would get terribly bored.
