Grave stele. Late Hitite, end of 8th - beginning of 7th century BC.
From Kahramanmaraş (190 km northeast of Adana). Not a excavation find.
Basalt, Height: 100 cm.
A woman seated on a high backed chair, with a young man facing her.
A cloak with tasselled edge is wound round her body. In her left hand she is holding a spindle with the thread hanging down from te spindle to a rectangular box at her feet.
The young man is wearing a long simple garment and is holding a stylus in one hand, and a tablet in the other.
A funeral meal is shown on a high-legged table between them.
The relief depicts a mother and her literate son from a noble family.
