Though the first Mawlawi House was founded here in 1491, it was destroyed during an earthquake in 1509. Later it was rebuilt, then extended and so forth. The oldest remaining part is the Hasan Agha Fountain, dated 1649. The renewed house burnt down in a big fire in the area in 1765, was rebuilt in the same year, extended and changed repeatedly in the 19th century. In 1925 dervish lodges were closed by law. The building functioned as a school for a while, but in 1975 the first visitors entered it as a museum. In 2005-2009 it was extensively restored and reopened in 2010.
