MEDALLION SARCOPHAGUS
Marble
L: 191 cm. H: 78 cm.
Roman Period, 2nd century A.D.
Perge, Western Necropolis - A.380
The gable-shaped lid contains floral akroterion on the corners and an omphalos in the pediment. The antefixes at the end of the carved roof tiles have lion-heads. Each of the four sides of this sarchophagus has a carved Medusa head in a medallion; those on the long sides of the tomb are supported by Nikai at one side and by Erotes on the other.
