“Tünel” Carriage and railway winding engine. The “Tünel” – a short, steep underground railway from Galata up to Istiklal Street – was opened for service on the 17th of January 1875 and is the third oldest passenger underground, after London and New York. This original wagon was initially hauled on a metal strap by massive steam engines, one of which is also exhibited alongside, a magnificent horizontal duplex steam engine made by the Schneider-Creusot iron and steel works in France in 1873.
