Quran, 14th century. Gift from a Mamluk sultan to Yıldırım Beyazit.
This Mamluk sultan is Berkok (also written: Berkuk/Barquq), who reigned 1382-89 & 1390-99.
In 1393, he joined an alliance with the Ottoman Empire against the Mongol warlord Timurlenk, who threatened both the Ottomans and the Mamluk territories in Syria. At this occasion, gifts were exchanged, including this Quran. The alliance did not work out well: Timur invaded and defeated the Mamluks at Damascus and sacked it along with Aleppo in 1399. Timur then invaded the Ottoman Empire and defeated them at Ankara, captured the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid and sacked the city.
