On the picture: Global view of the semi-circular rock wall that had been carved out of the mountain slope, and where the two-storey gallery behind the temple of August had been built. The pile of stone blocks in front of it, are the podium and some other remains of the Augustus Temple. This building, the large esplanade in front of it, and the gallery behind it formed together a monumental imperial sanctuary called ‘Augusteum’.
Current thinking is that construction started when Augustus was alive, and that it as dedicated to him after his death (14 AD). The construction activities continued in the period spanning the time of Roman Emperor Tiberius to the time of Claudius (41 – 54).
