(At) Propylon. The twelve steps at the end of the Tiberius Square belong to the monumental Propylon which is a passage leading up to the Imperial Sanctuary (Augustuis Temple) on the plain behind. The Propylon was an inspiration not only to the later Western Gate but also for many buildings with its massive entablature carried by four Corinthian columns in front and at the rear, triple-arched entrance and plastic decoration. It was built to honour Octavian, who was given the title Augustus after he won the Naval Battle at Actium against Marcus Antonius in 35 BC and thus became the single power in the Roman world. This is confirmed by its providing passage to the Augustan Temple behind and even being in an architectural integrity. Famous Res Gestae Divi Augusti (deeds of the deified Augustus) was also found at Propylon excavations and on display in the Yalvaç Museum. Since Res Gestae was found in fragments, its original place was controversial. However, researchers agreed that it was on each side of the central entrance. Side arches of the triple arched entrance are 3,5 m wide and the central entrance is 4,5 m wide. On the blank spaces of the upper part of the central arch, two kneeling bound Pisidian captives, one naked, are depicted in relief. Reliefs of Eros, god of love, Nikke, goddess of victory, carrying garlands are depicted on the upper parts of the arches over the side entrance. The inscription mounted with bronze characters on the architrave over the central entrance read as follows “For Emperor Caesar Augustus, son of a god, pontifex maximus, consul for the 13th time, tribunus for the 234rd time, emperor for the 14th time, father of the land”.
