Marble
L: 165 cm.W: 117 cm.
Roman Period, 2nd century A.D.
Perge, Eastern Necropolis - A.928
A typical Columned Anatolian Sarcophagus of fine white marble in two pieces. The gable-shaped lid contains floral akroterion on its corners and a Medusa Head in the pediment. The antefixes are carved as lion-heads.The body of this sarcophagus exhibits the twelve labours of Herakles, each scene carved between spiral grooved columns of the Corinthian order upon a high base. One of the narrow
side contains a door guarded by the Dioskuroi symbolising the entrance to Hades.
