An initiative of the Turkish Presidency of Religious Affairs, an official institution established in 1924 after the abolition of the caliphate. Founded by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (in article 136 of the constitution) as a successor to Sheikh ul-Islam, it is normally referred to simply as the ‘Diyanet’.
