Antakya dec 2008 6003.jpg

A column base in the shape of two lions, from Tell Tainat; they stood at the entrance to the temple.
Neo-Hittite, Assyrian style lions, 8th century BC. Basalt, width: 80 cm; length: 110 cm.

Tell Tayinat (Tell Tainat) is located about 25km east to the city of Antakya. The site is about 800 meters to the site of Tell Açana. The site's ancient name was probably Kunulua which was the capital of Neo-Hittite kingdom Patina/Unqi (which were names used by Assyrians). Several orthostats and ornamented columnbases were found, which date to 9th - 7th centuries BC.
