Dogubeyazit 45.jpg

These pictures all are of the famous Ishak Paşa Saray – and of the nearby fortress as well as some picturesque scenes of houses nearby and so forth. The Saray itself was built on a rock outcrop at 2220 meters. It was built around 1700, partly to control the Silk Road that passed here. There was a stronghold even in Urartian times, and later the Seljuks and Ottoman rulers had fortresses here. After his defeat by Timur Lenk in the Battle of Ankara (1402) Beyazit I (Yıldırım or Thunderbolt) was kept prisoner here. The palace was built for the Kurdish ruler Ishak Paşa and is in a mixture of styles, amongst them Armenian and Georgian. Some of the pictures had to be edited to an extent that the colours have suffered a lot, sorry for that.
