This is the Beyazit Tower, built on order of Mahmut II in 1828 on the spot where there had long been a wooden observation tower for fire-watchers. It is some 50 metres high, I hope to climb it some day (180 steps, it seemed). The firebrigade (itfaiye) still claims possession.
