Hyakunin-bansho Samurai Guardhouse near the Ote-mon Gate on the grounds of the Imperial Palace - Tokyo

This is one of three original Samurai gaurdhouses remaining in the Imperial Palace complex. The Ote-mon Gate was the main entrance to the original castle during the early 1600's to the mid 1800's (Eido Period). Approximately 100 Samurai warriors used this building as their living quarters. They had easy access to the original castle's main entrance at the Ote-mon Gate where they inspected visitors to the castle.
