Wat Phnom is a sacred Buddhist temple sitting prominently atop a small hill. At this location it has been a central site in the city as a religious sanctuary for prayers and offerings since 1373. The current version of the temple was originally rebuilt in 1926. It had a full face-lift in 1998.
Legend is that the original temple at this hill site was built by Lady Penh. "Phnom" means "hill," so the city Phnom Penh means "the hill of the lady Penh."
