Many people believe that Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount was delivered on the site where this church was built - next to the Sea of Galilee. The church is owned by the Franciscans.
Sea of Galilee - Israel’s chief source of water but it’s running low. It’s fed and drained by the Jordan River. Jesus did most of his preaching by the shores of the Sea of Galilee. It is where he supposedly walked on water and fed the crowds by multiplying bread and fish. Roughly 75% of Jesus’ activity recorded in the New Testament occurred in this area. Many of his disciples were fisherman here.
