My mother, Eugenia Halbmeier was a good friend of Yolanda's. Mom passed away earlier this year and in her effects we found many Christmas cards from Yolanda. Beautiful works of art that we will treasure. I wish that I had known her:all of the comments below are so glowing that I know what a special lady she must have been. My sympathies to the family.

I first met Yolanda at a folk music night on Monhegan about 25 years ago. She kept staring at me during the event and approached me afterward saying I looked very similar to her son. She even produced a photo of her son and sure enough there was a strong resemblance. Every Summer since when I would visit the island I would drop by her studio...as I'd approach her door, she'd shout out "My Son!!" with that wonderful humor and smile of hers. I never considered a trip to Monhegan complete without spending time with this amazing and incredibly gifted lady. Two years ago we invited her to attend a dinner party at our rental house. As I escorted her up the steep trail to the house in the dark, she charged ahead at full speed even though she could barely see in the dark.....I could barely keep up with her. She had the energy and gusto for life of someone 30 years younger. I will miss her terribly, my visits to Monhegan will never be the same without my visits with Yolanda. I have quite a collection of her works and have them all proudly displayed around my house as a tribute to this amazing woman.

We just recently learned of Yolanda's passing.
My daughters, grandchildren and I first met Yolanda several years ago when we visited Monhegan.
We immediately were smitten by her She was an exceptionally friendly lady and fully loved life. She frequently joined us for dinner and told us so many wonderful stories about her childhood, moving to the US,life in New York and all the wonderful people she knew. The amazing thing was she never told the same story twice. She talked frequently about her family and was so proud of her grandchildren. It goes without saying that she was an amazing artist and generous to my daughter who is also an artist. Yolanda encouraged her and also gently critiqued her work. I have seveal of her paintings but my favorite is the water color of Tom Gill. It took me three summers to talk her into selling it to me. It is special bacause we also met him on Monhegan and I have one of his drawings. We loved her and will miss her.

To Elena, and Chris, and all who were important in Yolanda's life....I truly enjoyed the last 6 weeks I spent caring for this amazing lady. I soon discovered that she was a powerful force to be respected, no matter what she was doing. In the weeks that followed she began to reveal to me a softer and more serene side. I travelled by ferry to Monhegan many times to check on her. She was not that easy to please at first. Her initial comments were "Oh, it's that nurse again". I thought I would never get close to her. But as the weeks passed, her comments changed to, "Oh, it's Maria. Come hold my hand." I'm certain that it was this peaceful side living deep inside of her, that she revealed to all of us in her stunning paintings. I spent many hours gazing at them as I kept a watchful eye on her. The painting of a group of cosmos was one of my favorites. Initially, I was in complete awe of her talent; and then finally, of the artist herself. I wish you Godspeed Yolanda. It was my complete privege and pleasure to know you....Maria

I am most sad to report that earlier today, August 21, 2009, Yolanda Fusco, my grandma, has passed away. she will be greatly missed by all but we are blessed in that she has left behind so many great works of art that will live on

I am a visitor to Monhegan Island and love Yolanda's work... She is a sweet lady.. Hope she will be on the Island this summer.
