Nanoreefing - Fish & Livestock ~ Joys and Tribulations ~ Part 3, ICH

The next and ongoing tribulation...ICH:

At the end of January our Royal Gramma started "flashing" the rocks. After several days of observation and research we decided to set up a separate hyposaline tank to isolate the fish. The move was made on Feb 7th, ultimately requiring the removal of the majority of the live rock to catch the Gramma. All the fish were acclimated to the lowered salinity, and appeared to adjust well to the new 29 Gal AGA tank...except for Charlie, our Yellowhead Jawfish. He was definitely not pleased to be separated from his burrow. The tank has an airstone, heater, and biowheel but no lighting or hood. We used a thin sheet of acrylic as a cover and cut holes for the biowheel and heater. Sadly this was not a sufficient cover to contain Charlie as he managed to find the one place he could jump through. RIP Charlie...you were loved and are sorely missed.

The specific gravity in the tank was lowered to 1.009 over three days. They all seem to be doing fairly well, but the Gramma doesn't seem to have regained it's appetite fully. The last 15 images in the gallery were taken between 1/25 and 2/16. Update: Sadly we lost the Gramma on the morning of Feb 17th.

Mar 1st: Pictures of our two surviving fish have been added taken Feb 18th and Feb 22nd. Both are still doing fine in the 10 Gal AGA tank we moved them into on Feb 17th. The tank is barebottom with only PVC fittings...no substrate or rocks. I have been doing daily 5 Gal water changes to keep the Nitrite down.

Mar 13th: Back in the BC29! On Mar 5th some dark spots appeared on the smaller Clown's head, and it had stopped eating. Since the smaller one has been displaying a lot of submissive behavior, I believe they have paired and the larger one has become the female. On Mar 9th a decision was made to raise the salinity to move them back into "good" water by Mar 13th. This is sooner than planned, but the BC29 will have been fallow for 5 weeks. The male had lost a lot of weight, but started eating a few days ago.

In the future any new livestock will be QUARANTINED before they enter the BC29!!!!
