Mysteries September 30

As I was growing up, I remember watching men working on cars, "tinkering" they called it, with the engines. Changing sparkplugs, checking the 'timing', looking at the oil dipstick as carefully as a doctor examined the fluid level in a syringe. On the ground next to them was a moisture covered bottle (glass, not plastic) of Coke or beer. It was a deeply mysterious - very male - thing to do. When I got my first car, I asked about the mysterious things under the hood. "Oh, you don't need to know that stuff," usually said with an indulgent smile - fortunately absent a hair ruffling which might have meant the loss of said ruffling fingers via a nasty bite.
Today I discovered something new under that hood. It is less mysterious than I originally thought - and I think this is one male mystery more women need to explore just a bit. Oil and filter, fluid levels, how to change a flat tire.

And equally, how to smile and say "Yes, thank you sooo much!" when someone asks if you'd like help with that flat.
