During the Civil War, Maryland was in an awkward position, really. As a true mid-Atlantic state, it hovered between North and South. Scattered throughout the state are markers of this type - the blending of Union and Confederate stones, one next to the other; some brothers in spirit, others literal brothers. Divided by war, they are united in memorial and the relative immortality of the stones that mark their death.
