The forests of the Kirrama Range have been traumatised by two tropical cyclones (hurricanes) in recent memory.
TC Larry in 2006 was a Category 5 storm that brushed the Kirrama Range as a Category 4 – quite severe enough.
Then, five years later, TC Yasi hit directly as a Category 5 storm. Cat. 5 is the strongest category of cyclone there is with wind speeds exceeding 250 km/h.
On exposed northern ridges such as shown here, the damage is still very evident, whilst in more sheltered areas the damage is no longer so obvious.
