Home is the tropical uplands (900 m ASL) of north Queensland, Australia, on the drier fringe of the Wet Tropics bioregion beyond where rainforest occurs.
It can be quite dry for a number of months each year and in winter there's an occasional frost.
Soils are infertile granitic clays but hold moisture quite well.
