This is a section of the Madison River just outside the west entrance of Yellowstone Park and just upstream from Quake Lake (officially Earthquake Lake), in southwestern Montana. This six-mile long and one-hundred fifty feet deep lake was created after a massive earthquake (7.5 on the Richter scale) struck on August 17, 1959, killing 28 people who were camped along the shoreline of Lake Hebgen and the Madison River. I believe that the Madison River here, and in other stretches,
is one of the most beautiful rivers in the country.
