The pathetic looking W. 10th Avenue parking lot at Palm Springs Middle School (#1955) - comments below:

W. 10th Avenue and W. 56th Street, Hialeah

Back in the good old days when this school was new, there was no fence around this parking lot and there was an entrance onto W. 10th Avenue close to the corner.

I am looking at the photo in amazement because for a school that is now 50 years old there are no mature shade trees anywhere around it and this could have been full of mature huge oaks had anyone in power had any environmental sensitivity. This junior high/middle school must have had a succession of tree-hating principals over the years and they all blew an opportunity to leave something of beauty behind. The arrow points to the best that they can do, a stump of a tree cut off a foot or two above the ground. This parking lot could have been bordered by large shade trees providing shade to pedestrians, vehicles in the parking lot, stopping the majority of the asphalt parking lot from being a heat sink in the burning sun, and tree planting would have made the school a visual treat to the neighborhood instead of an ugly eyesore.

Are the cement bike racks still at the elementry school?Do they still have the student patrols to help younger kids cross the street.I remember a tall tan pretty blonde wearing patrol shoulder strap with the badge on the corner of 56 and 12th ave.I thought she was really cool and had a great personality .I was in 1st grade she must of been in 5th or 6th,I would sneak around the field so I could see her again .Miami girls!Just another piece of our culture. The trees not just the school ,but everywhere cut down. The place looks like a used carlot .Don you could say that from Palm Beach to Homestead looks like this picture of PSJH parking lot.Do the local politicians launder money in the tree business ?How bad can it get in the future ?Let see they can make the fence higher, add razor wire to the top and cut down the palm trees .The poor everglades, the concrete blob needs to get bigger and bigger!

Guest: great venting! Great opinions and I concur, except that there are a good number of well-landscaped schools with mature beautiful trees. Unfortunately Palm Springs Jr. (now Middle) is not one of them and is pathetic looking with little palms that do absolutely nothing for shade or birds. You would think that educators would be environmentally sensitive and do something to improve the environment around their schools. Look at all that asphalt in the swales along the streets and the parking lot soaking up the sun and blocking rainfall from entering the ground.

Let me vent about schools today...

Trees? Lawyers call them 'attractive nuisances' Kid climbs them, falls, skins knee, school board sued for millions.

Big green grassy play grounds? Fat kids yell discrimination because they can't run. Any teacher attempting to get a kid to exercise today is charged with child abuse.

Why do elementary schools need so many parking spaces? I know some kids flunk a lot but how many really drive to school? The problem is the soccer moms. Jr. can't be expected WALK home, god no. The air conditioned Hummer must be waiting to whisk Jr. home within seconds of the last bell ringing.

In my day (elementary 1966-72) we actually had recess. Running, softball, dodgeball, square dancing, basket ball, anything to get us moving. We walked home or rode a bike from school. I don't remember one obese kid in my school. Sure some were a little chubby, or husky as the stores called it, but they could still move and were often just as active.

And not all of us rushed from campus every day. We stuck around because some of the teachers stuck around. We worked on projects together, plays, concerts. At one time elementary schools had music and art teachers.

Today, its roll the kid into the prison like building, pump every question from FCAT into his brain, the roll him out. Don't let him think for him/her self. Don't allow creativity. Learning has been replaced by FCAT cramming.

The ones that lose here are the teachers. Most know what they wanted to do coming out of college. Some have be re-programmed by Administration. Some see the problem and give up. Some give up by following along, the best ones quit out of frustration.

So moms... don't want Jr. to die of obesity before college? Turn off Oprah, WALK to the kid's school, pick him up, and walk home. While you're waiting, ask the principal what it will take to turn the building back into a school.

There, I feel better now.
