1972 - Government Cut and the real South Beach

South Beach, Florida

Photo taken from a National Airlines DC-10 on a local "Air Fair" flight introducing the new DC-10's to the public.

Interesting notes: Fisher Island has not been developed, the Dodge Island Seaport has not been expanded, there are still trees on the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers property along Government Cut, the dog track and two-story parking garage are still there, and the fishing pier is still there.

A little Fisher Island trivia I learned: A small part of the island is technically in the City of Miami Beach. Why? Some of the fill that made the island was from the Miami Beach side of Gov. Cut. In practice however, Miami Beach fire and police don't respond to the buildings on Fisher Island. There's a Miami Dade Fire Rescue station with an Engine and a Rescue on the island so the first responding units don't have to wait for the ferry.

In 1984 the barracks that belonged to the Army Corp of Engineers were burned by
the Miami Beach Fire Dept for training.

This Photo sure looks a lot older than 1972. it appears the old dog track is still there. Some of the best Snook fishing in the area is along the North Jetty.

You nailed it! The beach between the fishing pier and the jetty was the place to be back in the 60's, with gorgeous babes on the beach and the surfboard shops and bagel bakery across the street from the fishing pier. Life was excellent. Don

Ah the real South Beach. Our second home back then. When I die I'll probably wake up there, sitting in my '57 Chevy Wagon parked under the parking garage, listening to "Holy Joe" berating the girls wearing bikinis.
