1964 - the Royal Castle restaurant at NE 87 Street and Biscayne Boulevard, Miami

Miami, Florida

Thank you to former Miamian Dave Kleylein (William Jennings Bryan Elementary, North Miami Junior High, North Miami High, and Norland High Class of 1962) for contributing this image. This site was later purhcased by Mike Gordon and he operated The Fish Peddler restaurant there for years in the 80's and 90's. Most of us really loved the Royal Castles as kids and I ate in this one at least several times.

Becky Bragg's father was a VP for Royal Castle. I dated Becky for 4 years and we fucked each other's brains out. She married another man and he is a big wuss.

I love to go to old restaurant. It reminds me when I was young. This restaurant looks like the restaurants back in my days. I wonder if this restaurant is still around or if they have replaced it?http://www.o2taphouseandgrill.com

My first trip to Royal Castle was to this particular location in the early 1960's on the back of my cousins bike. We ate like kings on what would be pocket change these days.

Last time I was in the area, about two years ago, there was still one of these open and making the burger the same way...at NW 7 Avenue and 125 Street in North Miami. It looks exactly the same. I think it is owned by a local guy...Wayne Arnold?...not sure. Neil Rogers frequented the place and they had a burger named after him..."the Neily" they called it. It was a standard mini-burger with bacon. I also had a birch beer with my burgers. Brought back found memories! The neighborhoods not the best so don't go late.

My father, M. D. Comfort, was a refrigeration and air-conditioning contractor and Royal Castle was his second largest customer behind only Shell's City Super Store on NW 7th Avenue.
We lived at 545 NE 66th Street, 1/2 block east of Biscayne Boulevard. I frequented the Royal Castle at NE 61st Street & Biscayne while at Miami Edison HS and the one at 87th Street & Biscayne every morning on my way home after working the night shift at the Winn-Dixie warehouse in Hialeah one summer while in college. I'd always get five burgers, fries, a Birch Beer and a chocolate milkshake. Saved enough money that summer to buy a Honda 350 motorcycle!

This brings back very fond memories for me. I lived not far from this Royal Castle and ate many of their hamburgers

I am remembering Royal Castle and Becky Bragg Olsen. We all lived in Miami Shores and attended Miami-Edison Sr. High in the 1970's. Yes, there were numerous trips to the Royal Castle on 63 street, Little River on the way home and North Miami 6th avenue. What a treat. I am soory to admit that I was not aware the her father was with Royall Castle. Maybe she can tell us some more interesting stories? Just hold up two fingers and the cook knew exactly what you wanted to order. I also recall the Becky Bragg was very talented with the electronic music keyboard. I am an antique collector and one of my specialties is Royal Castle memorabilia, their china and mugs. Different logos and dates of use.

My friends and I attended Edison Sr. High in the 70's on lunch breaks once a week we would head down to Royal Castle on 63rd st and biscayne blvd., and order 32 cheeseburgers. It's gone now ,but the one on 79th st. and 27th ave is still there.

I worked in this Royal Castle for a couple of years. I dated Becky Bragg for 4 years and we had a great time together.

Thanks for posting this! My dad was with the Royal Castle company from the 40's until he retired in 1968 or 69. I have wonderful memories of going to new store openings with him and my mom, and him bringing home boxes of 'crippled' honeybuns that were too misshapen to be sold. *g*

Any one remember the honey buns there? They were sooooo good, also had to have a frosted glass of root beer to wash it down.

Brad, I helped open this Royal Castle in 1964. I probably served you a time or two in this store. I left this Royal Castle to go to Atlanta where they were trying to get into the market there. Unfortunately things started going downhill for Royal Castle shortly there after. Ten hour days, six days a week, that was a bit much and the no tipping policy hurt as far as getting good help. There were some good times though!

Burl, that was on 61 and biscayne...the terazzo is still on the floor!

I lived on NE 87th Street and the bay and attended Horace Mann Junior High. Every day on the way home from school we would stop for burgers and birch beer at this Royal Castle. It was 1964, 1965, and 1966. Those were great times in a wonderful place.

Sorry - I meant NORTH, not south.
Lee Martines 12-Feb-2008 10:02
There used to be a Royal Castle just south of the Rosetta Theater on NE 2nd Ave south of 79th St and in the late forties we'd get 3 burgers and a birch for 35 cents. It was upsetting when the burger prices went up to 11 cents each! What memories of those wonderful little burgers that nobody could match, and that great, frosted mug of birch beer.
burl Grey 12-Feb-2008 03:43
There was a Royal Castle that looked like that somewhere South of 79th street on Biscayne Blvd in 1943!
I worked the night shift there alone for one night.
My base was the Royal Castle on NE 1st near the corner of NE 2nd Avenue.
I was drafted from there for WWII, in March of 1943.

Remember when President Nixon said "what this country needs is a good 10 cent hamburger." Royal Castle had a period of time when all burgers were 10 cents. I got a bag full!
Guest 31-Jan-2008 20:43
15 cent burger with 5 cent birch in a frosted mug-don't worry-the chocolate pudding pie would take your mind off the cigarette dangling from the short order cook's mouth.
