1965 - Royal Castle restaurant at 2700 NW 79th Street, Miami (as of late 2013, it is the LAST remaining open Royal Castle)

2700 NW 79 Street, Miami, Florida view map

This was one of many Royal Castles in Dade County and this newer style version was located in the southwest corner of 79th Street and 27th Avenue. This site was formerly occupied by the parking lot for the famous Frank 'n Bun drive in restaurant further to the right. Funland Park was located just to the south of this Royal Castle on 27th Avenue, and the property is now a big parking lot in the satellite photo if you click on "view map" above. I occasionally dined at this Royal Castle while working at Sears in late 1965/early 1966 and again in the early 1970s at Northside Shopping Center on the northwest corner of this intersection. My first dining experience in a Royal Castle was on NE 2nd Avenue and 79th Street in the mid-1950's and I fell in love with them. The early Royal Castles were not air-conditioned and I remember flies galore while eating there. The counter and grill guys were ex-servicemen and many had tattoos on their arms. They either wore sailor hats or white paper hats along with white t-shirts with the sleeves rolled up with cigarette packs tucked in. I remember the grill guys smoking while they were flipping burgers and mashing out the grease. If they kept their cigarette ashes out of the burgers it was a miracle. A lot of these guys were real characters and it was entertaining to watch them and listen to them.

Fortunately for me, Royal Castle built an air-conditioned restaurant on Palm Springs Mile in west Hialeah after we moved out there in 1957 and I was able to savor their yummy burgers, birch beer, honeybuns, chocolate pies and jelly donuts for years. Their breakfasts of fried eggs, grits and toast were also great. I remember the hamburgers at 15 cents, birch beer at a nickel and later 7 cents, and great jelly donuts and honeybuns for 10 cents. The jukeboxes on the counters were cheap at a nickel as I recall.

Real progress came to the chain when they air-conditioned all of their restaurants and started hiring women in the later years.

I lived in Westwood Lake & used to go to the Royal Castle at 107th Avenue & Bird Road all the time for 16 cent burgers. Across the street next to the Army-Navy store was a Burger Castle.

Guest from 1-JUN-2017, I remember Toby's and undoubtedly went into one when a kid or teenager. I don't have any photos of one and I don't recall seeing any photos of one being posted online. Someday someone will come up with one and if I see it I'll add it to the site. Best regards,

Don

Hi Dan. I see someone mentioned Toby's toy store below. Do you (or anyone else) have any photos of Toby's (either the 27th avenue or the 7th avenue locations)?

Looking for information on a man who used to work at the Royal Castle in West Palm Beach whose name may have been Mike. I believe he worked at both the 45th street location and the Dixie and Forest Hill Location back in 1969 - 1970. He worked with a woman by the name of Dagmar Joeggi and a woman by the name of Melanie Gayle Lewis. Any information on this man would be greatly appreciated.

My Wife wanted to see the places I grew up around Dade. Royal Castle was a bright place in the long Friday twilights by US-1 in South Miami Heights. No trace, of much, after over 40 years. I was tickled to visit the 2700 NW 79th site, The owners were cordial and the food was right out of a time machine.

We will be in Miami in September. My mom grew up and lived on SW 54th st. We were talking about places she used to go to and Royal Castle Burger was one....will go get a burger and birch beer :) She was excited to hear this one was still open.

First Royal Castle I remember was a Palm and Okeechobee Rd in Hialeah. We lived fairly close then, and dad would take us there for birch beer in a frosty mug. Great memories, thanks Don.

Weekday mornings in the 1960s, at the RC on 79th St., on my way to work in Hialeah, I'd sit on a stool and have breakfast: fried egg, grits, toast, coffee. On the wall there (and/or at other RCs) was a sign saying: No Tipping. But I seem to recall that in the late Sixties the sign was removed or ignored.

Guest of 10-Aug-2014, thank you for your comments which are amusing in some respect but also very poignant.

Bill, thank you also for your comments. I spent more hard earned money in that same Royal Castle on Palm Springs Mile than any other restaurant, diner, etc. from when I was 10 years old to 17 years old. Birch beer, coffee, hamburgers, eggs and toast, honey buns, jelly donuts, chocolate pie - what more could one possibly want back in those days? Later on they added on to that restaurant and had "feast burgers" to compete with the Whopper, I suppose, and they were delicious. I'm sorry I didn't patronize Royal Castle more after I returned from serving in the USCG for four years - I was patronizing Lums and other places because I wanted beer with my meals. I'm afraid that we'll never see Royal Castles all over the place again because of the cost of land or leases and the requirement to charge good bucks for food in order to pay all the overhead. : ( This is another reason why I keep saying that we lived at a great time to live.

My first taste of American food and my first words in English were "two hamburger to go" and "water to go" my second day in Miami, September 5, 1961, Royal Castle NW 36st and 17th av across from Jackson High Thanks for the memories
Bill 20-Feb-2014 00:19
How well I remember Royal Castle! Especially the one on Palm Springs Mile. I lived in the Miami area for 20 years and likely ate at most of them. They were the best burgers one could find anywhere. Buy them by the box to take home along with that wonderful Birch Beer! I am sure RC could make a comeback. Maybe in North Carolina :)???
Don Boyd07-Feb-2014 05:19
Robert, thank you for posting your comments. The Royal Castle in the photo was adjacent to an amusement park called Funland, not Fun Fair. Fun Fair was on the 79th Street Causeway several miles to the east and it didn't have what you described in your comments. From what I see on various Facebook groups about the old days in Miami, a lot of people confuse the two parks because of the word "Fun." The roller coaster at Funland was called the "The Wild Mouse" and there are some photos from Funland on this site plus a photo of Fun Fair if you look hard enough.

And for those who don't know, the Royal Castle in the above photo is now the last remaining Royal Castle still in operation. Arnold's Royal Castle on NW 7th Avenue in North Miami was sold recently and the new owner has closed it. It will probably turn into a check cashing store or something like the one in Hollywood at US 441 and Hollywood Boulevard did until they recently bulldozed it.

I used to eat at Royal Castle after leaving an amusement park called Fun Fair that was directly behind the RC stand. Fun Fair had the noisiest roller coaster, but for a kid in the 60’s it was 500 ft in the air. They had a dark haunt house full of partition you had to find your way out of, many were dead ends. My favorites were the bumper cars whose smell of burning electrode is as fresh in memory as the days I rode them. The smell was produced as the contact pole touched the ceiling and when you pressed down on the gas pedal sparks were generated as you moved along the grid. The comment about Goldfinger movie (that Atlantic Iron and Metal was at Opa-locka Blvd and 32nd Avenue) is incorrect. On the special 007 edition of Goldfinger DVD, it states that it was located at NW North River Drive and 32nd Ave. I should know, I lived three blocks away from it and as a kid I knew Mr. Kaplan the owner and he would let me watch them crush cars. They would have a mountain of those cubes stacked, 20/30 rows high, up until the empty gondola cars would line up behind the junk yard and get loaded up for shipment up north. As a teenage I also worked for Mr. Jaffe at Purity Condiments the place that sold Royal Castle the glaze that went on the buns, even though the buns looked greasy, it was actually peach glaze that gave it that look.

Jay, thank you for your comments and memories, and for providing the location on US1 north of Homestead. You take care too!

Jeff, my old buddy, thank you for advising us of the demise of Arnold's Royal Castle on NW 7th Avenue. That's a bummer now that we're down to one location.

Well, friends... as of this writing the 27th Avenue Royal Castle is the last in operation. NW 7th Avenue and 125th Street is now closed and [for the most part] has become a memory like Drug Fair (torn down years ago to build the Wendy's on that site), Denmark's, Bar-B-Q Barn and other North Miami 'landmarks'.

Years back, when I was collecting photos of Old Miami I contacted the widow of the owner of Drug Fair and in our conversation I asked her why she let the building sit there abandoned for years.

Her reply was "I didn't know what to do with the property". Well, her indecision worked out. If memory serves me right, she received $300,000 for the corner property from Wendy's!

Guest from 20 Sept. 2009 who was asking about scenes from the movie Goldfinger. I have answers for your questions:
1) Atlantic Iron and Metal was at (and still is I think) Opa-Locka Blvd just east of the CSX RR Tracks at about 32 Avenue.
2) Th RC they drive by was located at NW 27 Ave & Opa-Locka Blvd.
3) The KFC at 701, was and still is (minus the bucket) at 701 NW 119 Street in North Miami.
Mark 05-Feb-2013 08:17
Ate there last week. Tried to go back in time, but it wasn't easy. An old lady came in & said that she worked there as a teenager, but it fell on deaf ears of the guy working there. Still, the burgers were small & cheap! I had some fries too, but the original shop never had'm (until it was too late). Where's the Birch Beer?
Stephen P Stacy20-Jan-2013 22:54
I remember going to the Royal Castle on 27th ave., near the Silver Moon Bar and the one on LeJune and 26th in Hialeah, with my grandfather. He would come and visit from NJ and loved the birch beers. They have White Castle up there and it's almost identical except now it has drive-thru like everyone else.
Terence 30-May-2011 03:27
I finally visited this Royal Castle in May 2010. It still looks very much the same. I had six castle burgers with friest and a root beer (no birch beer at this location apparently).

I must say the burgers are unique and tasty.

But, yeah, be careful in this area if you're not from here and go to Royal Castle by day.
Don Boyd14-Apr-2011 21:54
What year did you graduate from high school? I believe the RC was on the corner of Palm and Okeechobee Road. Be careful when going to the 79th Street RC and go mid-day.

My memories go back to the Royal castle's in Ft. Lauderdale, the one by my house was on Davie Blvd and 27th ave(Riverland Rd)(now a Subway) and the other was on Federal Hwy and 26th ave(now a bike shop). Many great times eating there after Church at the counter with my dad.

I remember in 1960 after Hurricane Donna the Royal Castle on S.W. 124 th Street and US 1 had their own generator and was open. I can remember standing with my father in ankle deep water anxiously waiting for a bunch of burgers. At the time we considered it luxurious.

Hi...I would love to know if the guy named Gary Heery is the same Gary I played with as a kid when my family lived in Palm Lake Trailer Park in the early 60's. We used to have lots of fun at Fun Land Park on the Wild Mouse roller coaster. Please contact me if this is the same Gary. My maiden name is Armstrong and we lived in a trailer near the office. Please contact me.

As a U Miami student in the late 1950's, I enjoyed many a meal at Royal Castle... and thanks for reminding me about that delicious chocolate pie....

If your talking Miami restruants you have give credit to Billy's Drive In (or drive through if you were broke) on the 79th St Causway. I guess this was mostly Edison Kids but not exclusivly. Then as you went to Funland crossing over the 79th St bridge toward the beach was infamous Pelican Point (we called it peckers point).
Yea the R C Steakhouse burgers and birch beer was a food group all it's own which without I would have never survived my teens. Spinning on the stools while waiting was kind of necessary as well. Early 60's great time in Miami.
Don Boyd21-Sep-2009 03:32
Peter: Arnold's Royal Castle, in photos further below, serves Fanta Birch Beer and to my wife and me, it tastes just like Royal Castle's birch beer. It isn't served in thick frosted mugs like Royal Castle but the taste is the same to us.

WOW, can't beleive someone has a Royal Castle web page ! I didn't know any were still in business. As a child back in the early 60's my father used to take us to the one located on the corner of S. Federal Highway and Dania Beach Blvd. in Dania, Florida. The beach is only about 2 miles away and it was always something to look forward to after spending the day at the beach. I LOVED the "Birch Beer" ! ! The restaurant closed in the early-mid 70's I beleive, but as I can recall it looked like the one in the picture. I no longer live in Florida, but about 20 years ago I think I visited that Royal Castle pictured. Where I live in NC no one even has heard of Birch Beer... I cant find it anywhere and that is what promted me to search online for "Royal Castle Birch Beer" hoping to be able to find some and buy it. If ANYONE knows where I can buy R.C. Birch Beer or ANY kind of Birch Beer please write me at peteminter@gmail.com. I appreciate this website.. it brings back fond memories!

A Royal Castle restaurant appears three times in the 1964 James Bond flick, "Goldfinger," during the scene in which Oddjob eventually kills his passenger, Mr. Solo, and has the Lincoln Continental scrapped at a junkyard, the Atlantic Iron and Metal Co.

First the Lincoln Continental, and then the pursuing car with CIA agent, Felix Leiter, drive by the Royal Castle, which also appears on a background plate during a shot within the CIA vehicle.

Probably those who remember Miami back then will know for sure. But most of this particular sequence appears to have been filmed in the airport area on Lejuene Road (Oddjob drives right by the airport) and NW 87th Avenue. I saw the Ford Dorall dealership and the open grassy area where Oddjob shoots solo - with the 836 overpass - still exists along 87th Avenue.

Maybe someone will know or remember the Royal Castle that appears. You can see that it was obliquely opposite Joe's Drive-In Restaurant, with a Sunoco Gas Station next door. During this scene, Leiter, emerges from a Kentucky Fried Chicken with a 701 address, while I also spotted a Food Fair (in a film-plate behind Oddjob) and what appears to be the Ritz Restaurant at the end of the scene.

An earlier scene in Goldfinger was shot at the Fontainebleu Resort on Miami Beach.

Visited this store last year and was sadly dissappointed. Even after asking if everything was the same as the original items, my burgers came loaded with mustard and ketchup and the "birch beer"was simply root beer. After driving 200 miles to get there, it was a huge letdown. I guess the truth of the matter is that sometimes you "just can't go back".
Don Boyd10-Jul-2009 03:10
Anita, this photo is in a gallery full of old Miami restaurants and if you'll scroll to the bottom of that gallery you'll see Arnold's Royal Castle at 125th and NW 7th Avenue which reopened recently. I don't know if you found this photo via a link or while perusing the restaurants gallery but it is still open, just like the one in this photo.

I remember going to the Royal Castle on 125th street and NW 7th avenue. We would all go to church at St. James Catholic Church down the street and sometimes my Mom would take us their for a treat. The hamburgers were delicious with the tiny onions... so cheap...it was my first experience touching the bottom of the counter and learning that people use to stick there gum under it...I thought that was so nasty, but evidently people did it. It was there for years...I am not sure if it's still open since I don't get up that way to often. Anita Dee

Don Boyd14-Feb-2009 02:35
Ellen, the Fun Fair was over on the 79th Street Causeway. Funland Amusement Park was at 79th and 27th. A lot of folks get them confused due to name similarity. Thank you for posting your memories, especially the part about hitchhiking. I hitchhiked too whenever I missed the bus, contrary to my dad's orders to never do it, but it was nowhere as risky back then as it would be today, especially for a lady.

Oh my goodness, the Fun Fair on 27 Avenue and south of 79 street -- I remember going around the neighborhood collecting coupons from the Miami Herald or the Miami News -- not sure which one -- and getting enough that my cousin, Kathy, and I could go there and spend the day without spending a dime. I was born in 1943 so I think it was about 1955 when we lived in Edison Center and we would -- God forbid my grandchild should know this -- hitchhike to the fair!
Gary Heery 13-Dec-2008 13:17
Sorry, I made a mistake. The barmaids name was Ethel (she looked like Marilyn Monroe). May was one of the regulars. By the way are you related to Emma Boyd? Mrs. Boyd was my mothers good friend. When we would go to vist her, I used to love chopping down a stalk of sugar cane which she had in her garden.
Don Boyd13-Dec-2008 06:48
Welcome Gary, thank you for taking the time to write and post your comments, especially about things I didn't know like Funland still being in operation when the Royal Castle was there. There is an aerial photo of the new Northside Shopping Center in one of the galleries (1960s I think) and it shows the Frank 'n Bun there but I can't see Funland in the photo, which is weird. Thanks for pointing out the Dew Drop Inn in the background.

Gary Heery 13-Dec-2008 06:34
Don,
Just so you know the trailer park and sales office was J Bar J. The other trailer park that was to the otherside and behind Funland was Palm Lake. I lived in both of them and I remember the Frank-N-Bun when they had car-hop service. Before there was a Royal Castle on this site. Funland Park was still running when RC opened. My Mom dated one of the partners of Amusements of America (John Boatwright) The RC was built before the little strip mall with the Army & Navy Store. Northside Shopping Centers anchor store when it was built was Sears & Roebuck along with JC Penny, National Shirt Shop had a store there also as did Music Makers which sold records and musical intruments. There were many great stores of the time like Kresge's 5 & 10 and a F.W. Woolworth and a Zale's Jewlery store. "Up With America" sang from time to time in the center court of the SC. By the way across 27th Ave from Northside SC was the first Burger King. On the corner of 79th & 27th was the Sears Auto Center where they also sold Allstate cars and scooters. Ah yes the good old days. Thank you again for allowing me to limp through our history. By the way, the green building you see through the windows of the RC is the Dew Drop Inn Bar where May was the barmaid and her husband Sonny (looked like Don Ho) bartendered. Hope this helps.

I feel a lot of nostalgia. I was a kid in 1968 and 1971, but we used to go to Miami Beach for Holidays and we ate in a Royal Castle which was on Collins Avenue, close to a Neisner store (I dont remember how it was spelled), it was close or in Sunny Isles, we were at Reviva Motel, a small and modest hotel. I know Marco Polo Motel was close by. Do you have any pictures from that area? Thanks to all of you.

Hi Jim, thanks for reminding me about that delicious chocolate pie that they served. I loved it and ate many a slice but had totally forgotten about them. I couldn't possibly forget the great egg breakfasts and honey buns. You're right - Royal Castle was far better than McDonald's, Burger King or anything else to come down the pike since and I miss them too.

ROYAL CASTLE MEMORIES OF SAVING A NICKEL TO GET THE BIRCH BEER ON THE WAY HOME FROM SCHHOOL MY STEPDAD WAS A PROGRAMER FOR RC, SO IN HIGH SCHOOL I WORKED 2 YEARS , ON W 49TH ST. HIALEAH, WHEN YOU COOKED HAMBURGER IT WAS A SYSTEM OF 48 AT ONE TIME, THE ONIONS WERE DRIED SOAKED OVERNGHT TO RISE, FRESH PICKEL ON EACH BUN, THEY WERE BETTER THAN WHITE CASTLE , BK. OR MC D. I COOKED DOZENS OF EGG ON A SAT. MORNING, LOTS OF GRITS, ( I FINALLY LERNED TO LOVE GRITS.) RC ALSO HAD GREAT PIE CHOCLATE, LEMON MIRANGE, CUSTARD, THE BEST HONEY BUNS, IF THE BUSINESS WAS RUN RIGHT IT WOULD OF BEEN BIGGER THAN MC. DONALDS. I REMEMBER WHEN THEY BUILT THE FIRST BURGER KING, AND THE WHOPPER, RC EVEN TRIED TO DO A WHOPPER FLAME BRIOLED, THEY DIDNT NEED IT. I STILL REMEMBER MY MANAGERS NAME IT WAS INTERESTING, SAVAGE POE. HE WAS GOOD TO ME... YES WE WORKED FOR $1.00 HR. BUT GAS WAS A QUARTER. WE THOUGHT WE HAD MONEY , AND I THINK WE HAD BETTER TIMES THEN THEN NOW. I MISS ROYAL CASTLE.

Hi Don!
I definitely remember SOME kind of amusement park on 27th Ave just south of that Royal Castle in the mid-late '60s (I rode their small roller-coaster). Not sure if it was "Funland" or one of those affairs that travels from city to city. --X1

Southwest quadrant of N.W. 27th Avenue, and N.W. 79th street. Just south of Northside shopping center. Just behind the Royal Castle, and the trailers!

I wonder if you remember The Strudel's bakery in the Northside shopping center
Don Boyd27-Jan-2008 23:53
Really? Where is it in the 1960 aerial photos of Northside Shopping Center? I can't see it at all on a very large image 3 times the size of what is posted on this site.

I was born in 1958, and I can remember Funland being there well into the 60's.

Guest, thanks for identifying Pix and the other stores that would be to the right. This was the location of the Frank 'n Bun Drive-in, a very popular place in the 50's. The Funland amusement park was gone before this Royal Castle was built because it was gone when Frank 'n Bun was here. See the 1960 aerial photos of the new Northside Shopping Center in the same Gallery - you can see the Frank 'n Bun but not Funland. You can also see the mobile home dealer between this location and the Lum's.

Hello all former and present South Floridians! I recently discovered this swell site.

On the Royal Castle pic, here's extra info about the setting. That "P" you see in back was the PIX store. To the right of Pix was the Eagle Army-Navy, where a friend and I would buy comic books. Behind Pix (I think) was Thom McAn shoes. In back of all that was a small amusement park with a low-rise roller coaster. That Pepsi bus stop in front is where people would catch the MTA to Miami Beach. On the other side, 27th Ave, was a bus stop that took me to the Orange Bowl during the Dolphin Dynasty era (Griese-to-Warfield, Garo for 3). Between this and the Lums on 79th Street, I believe was a mobile home dealership. A few blocks south on 27th Avenue was the Toby's toy store.

There was another Royal Castle westward on 79th Street, in Hialeah, approaching Hialeah Hospital. Nothing could make your mouth water like a boxful of those lil' square burgers. And Royal Castle is where I discovered Orange Julius! --X1

What memories. I worked for Royal Castle as a counterman for a couple of years in the early 60s. Started out at $1.00 an hour and worked up to $1.15 - no tipping please. If I remember correctly the Royal Castle in Little River was the first one - open air as mentioned. They numbered their stores and later called the one in Little River # 2 and gave the #1 title to a store in downtown Miami. I worked at # 24 which was on NE 6th Avenue in North Miami. I also worked at the two that were built on Miami Beach, one was on Normandy Isle, # 88, and the other on Collins and 72nd, # 93. These were among the first of the new stores as pictured above. In 1964 Royal Castle decided to expand into Georgia and I worked in the first of their Georgia stores in Chamblee. There were also Royal Castles in New Orleans and I remember seeing one in Ohio as I traveled to Miami for vacations with my family. It was sad to see them deteriorate year by year as I vacationed in Miami.

WOW, talk about a blast from the past! I grew up on 17th Ave. & 131st St. (graduated Miami Central in 1982 for reference) and know everything y'all are mentioning all too well. As teens we hung out at the Lil General Store next to BK Lounge (as we called it, LOL) on 7th Ave. near 125th St. I moved to Orlando (Kissimmee) in 1994 and haven't been back to Miami since. I'm saddened to hear about Myers Subs...I always think that if I did get back down for a visit, I'd head there for one of my much missed Chicken Salad Subs...but, now, impossible. Is the BBQ Barn still open? What a landmark that place has been! Thanks so much for the trip down (the good ol' days) memory lane. I sure do miss a lot of old friends and Miami restaurants for sure!

You mentioned that the cooks were ex-servicemen. I just wanted you to know that my step-dad, Ed Downs, was an ex-serviceman that was a cook at Royal Castle. I remember the bags of burgers...WOW! They were the best. He worked there while he was going to the University of Miami.

Yes, near this location was the Fun - Land Park. The amusement park had the Wild Mouse. We used to collect bottle caps and turn them in to earn free tickets for the rides.

I remember well, four of us, in full dress uniform and formal dresses (two each) stopping at a Royal Castle, (aka RC steak house), after departing the 25th anniversary Civil Air Patrol Ball at the officer's club at Homestead AFB. We were out of place at the RC steakhouse and much enjoyed that.

OH, AND SPEAKING OF 7TH AVENUE, ANYONE REMEMBER ON THE WEST SIDE OF NW 7TH AND ABOUT 110TH STREET THE BIG GRAND WAY STORE ??IT WAS TWICE THE SIZE OF TODAY'S WAL-MART SUPERCENTERS. THERE WAS A BOWLING ALLEY ACROSS THE STREET. I'M A LITTLE TOO YOUNG TO REMEMBER MUCH ABOUT THAT BIG PLACE WAY FURTHER SOUTH CALLED SHELL CITY, BUT I REMEMBER EVERYBODY GOING THERE.

Thanks Rick for your comments about that area of North Miami. I had totally forgotten about Super X drug stores down here. I don't remember the massage parlor though, ha.

I grew up in 60’s & 70’s near the RC on 7th ave & NW 125th st. I remember the delicious diced grilled onions and the sweet buns they used; don’t think they ever used cheese. I usually would eat four burgers, fries, and a birch beer. Not sure what the reason or how often, but I remember the burgers would go on sale for five cents some times. It’s amazing how I can remember getting sick from eating twelve of those five cent burgers almost forty years ago. I’m glad there’s little chance that I will ever eat one again; they’ll remain delicious in my memory. I think I’ll track down some Birch Beer though.

Thanks for the memories of a Miami I once loved. You can’t ever really go home again.

Thewe was a Royal Castle on South Dixie Highway in the Cutler Ridge area in the early 1960s. It was located in the same strip as the Weinkles Licquor Store. Many a
Ridge Rat savored the burgers and birch beers. At that time the burgers were 15 cents
and the birch beers were a nickle. Alan Ogus, Ph.D., Palmetto High Class of 1964. Alive and well in Phoenix, Arizona

Guest: You're referring (I presume) to the North Miami Royal Castle on NE 6th Ave. and 125 Street, just North of the Intersection of those two streets and West Dixie Hwy.? Since you refer to going to a slot car track, this leads me to believe you meant North Miami... here's why:

The old Maragret-Ann Store on NE 6th Avenue became a Kwik Check, and they had a fire in the early 60's. After they relocated to the [closed] B-Thrifty Market on West Dixie Hwy. and 130th Street, the old location reopened as North Miami Slot Cars.

When that business closed, the Red, White and Blue Thrift Store opened there, and is still operating in that location...

My dad used to take me to a RC on US1 Dixie Hwy early in the morning before we went fishing. I felt like King Kong getting to eat 5 burgers at a setting. Later I would bike there to eat and go to a slot car racing joint right next door. Good memories, thanks for the pix. I never found anything to remind me of the taste of those burgers with the chopped white onions on little fried patties. I'm sure it's the nostalgia that makes them seem so good.

Soopping? Obviously, I meant shopping... but my fingers type faster than my brain allows!

William Singer never sold out Royal Castle. As age and health issues overtook him, he turned the reins of the business over to his kids.

Typical of that generation, they ran it into bankruptcy. Wayne Arnold - a former employee - bought the Royal Castle name out of bankruptcy, and that was his main location for years. He also owned the one on NE 125th Street and NW 7th Avenue. It's been closed for a while due to a fire. A third location had opened in the old Toddle House Restaurant on the corner of NE 9th Avenue and Ne 125th Street in the heart of North Miami, but it didn't last...

At one point, Royal Castle was so strong in Florida that it beat out the original - White Castle. White Castle was [and is] the FIRST hamburger/fast food chain (founded in 1922) and is still going strong... but they only lasted a few years in South Florida. Their principal locations were across from Miami High and just across the street of the 163rd Street Soopping Center (on the NW corner of 163rd Street and NE 12th Avenue).

What great burgers and birch beer. Had the best corners in S. Fla for their locations. Great eggs, grits & coffee. Sad day when theoriginal owner sold out. Never the same again. I must have eaten at all of them one time of another. I still have one of their coffee mugs.

Wow ... if my ole memory serves me right There was a Royal Castle on 49th street. It was a real family treat for my family to eat out. In those days...we ate at home. Yes, the beginning of fast food . I loved the birch beer. With 4 kids...it was probably a real adventure for my ole parents. lol

Someone who has not been to Miami area in over 40 years...but grew up there.
and btw I remember the First Kentucky Fried Chicken place too. I worked there one summer. I just came across this while Googling Hialeah High School Reunion.

My family moved to West Hialeah in 1957. Where was that Burger Castle? I don't remember. Wasn't it on West 49th Street and about 8th Avenue? My house was on West 10th Ave. and 55th Place...in front of Palm Springs Jr. High. I can remember riding my bike on the field that would later become the school. I attended Twin Lakes Elementary until DuPuis Elementary was compled in in about 1958/59.
