Miami Beach, Florida

Thank you to Jumpin' Jack O'Brien for contributing this image. Jumpin' Jack says: "Don, that's Marcia Valibus, Miss Miami Beach 1956, crowning Deanna Briggs, Miss Miami Beach of 1957 with (I think) Sammy Wealch (?) as Master of Ceremonies. Marcia and Deanna were good friends, both doing a lot of modeling in the South Florida area. Snowbird photographers and producers would come down from New York during the winter months and shoot their spring commercials in the Miami good weather."

What a great story, Chris. Thank you very much for posting your memories - that was great. Please feel free to post all over the site, wherever you feel is appropriate. We all have to preserve the memories of a great era in the Miami area for future generations to appreciate.

Back in the late 1940's a bunch of us kids would walk home from school with the Valibus sisters; Marcia and Dana. Both were stunning girls, with warm, friendly smiles that would make us boys feel even more goofy than we were already! Little did I know that I carried the books of a future pageant queen. Marcia was named Miss Miami Beach, the Orange Bowl Queen, and as Miss Florida appeared in the Miss Universe pageant. So any way here I am, 62 years later, in an L.A. burb recalling warm memories of my early years growing up on SW 32nd ave. between 5th-6th streets. I recall ~ Playing in a warm down-pour, catching tiny frogs that seemed to fall from the Florida sky ~ Walking home from school, holding perspiring hands with Jan; with out question the cutest freckle faced, blue eyed 3rd grader in my universe, with her golden hair trimmed Betty Boop style ~ The Saturday morning ritual of preparing for the dreaded clamp-on skate battle of the century, armed only with that notorious symbol of daring competition; the skate key! This is just a small offering of my first 14 years of my life in my beloved City of Miami.
