I was assigned to this unit in 1978 when the Reserve went to a "group" concept for reserve units in the Miami area and they needed a Yeoman to drill at this unit on Saturdays and at USCG Station Ft. Lauderdale on Sundays because all the other yeomen were being put into the new "Group" at USCG Base Miami Beach where I had been drilling. It was a dumb idea but I went along with it because of my interest in aviation and because Opa-locka was close to home in Miami Lakes. I did the Sunday drills up at Ft. Lauderdale for several months and realized I was killing myself because the Air Station Unit had enough work to take two days and so did the Ft. Lauderdale station. I quit going to Ft. Lauderdale, which royally pissed off the new Group Commander (CAPT Gene Patterson) who had come from the Air Station Reserve Unit, and he wanted to throw me out of the reserve. The CO of the Air Station Reserve Unit, CDR Wallace "Wally" Pawley, convinced him that I was needed both days and CAPT Patterson finally caved in and assigned another yeoman to handle Ft. Lauderdale. I remained in the Air Station Unit after being promoted to Chief Yeoman in 1981 and Chief Warrant Officer (PERS) in 1988. The unit was decommissioned in 1994 and all of us were reassigned to other reserve units.
