Late 1970's The Miami News

Late 1970's - the Omni Mall, anchored by J. C. Penney on the north end and the existing Jordan Marsh store on the south end

Biscayne Boulevard, Miami, Florida

This was a pretty marvelous mall when it opened with two levels of stores between the new J. C. Penney and the existing Jordan Marsh that I loved. There was a fabulous carousel in the middle along with the very nice Omni Hotel. I have interior photos of the mall somewhere in my storage boxes and I will post them after I scan them. One interesting point to note about this photo is that the Miami Herald building has The Miami News name on the building. The Miami News moved from their N. W. 7th Street building on the Miami River to leased space in the Herald building and paid the Herald to print their fine newspaper in an effort to lower their operating costs. The News was separately owned and had their own editorial staff, reporters and photographers until a decision was made to shut the newspaper down due to declining readership. The last Miami News issue was published on December 31, 1988.
