JUL-1955 From Suzette Martinez Wallace

1955 - the Andy and Mary Martinez family's new home at 6305 NW 111th Terrace in Palm Springs

6305 NW 111th Terrace, Dade County

Thank you to Suzette Martinez Wallace for contributing this great old image of her family's home when it was new. Her parents, Andy and Mary Martinez, lived in this home for 50 years before relocating upstate. Suzette graduated from Hialeah High in 1970, her sister Karen from Hialeah High in 1974 and her brother Mark from Hialeah-Miami Lakes in 1978.

This home was in the "county section" of Palm Springs that was completely surrounded by Hialeah and as the story goes the residents voted not to be incorporated by the City of Hialeah because the county's property taxes were lower. The residents of the "county section" had county garbage, police and fire service instead of Hialeah's and it took many years before the county and Hialeah created a pact that allowed Hialeah to provide emergency services since the county's police and fire stations were so distant from the area.

The equivalent Hialeah address would be in the 900 block of W. 57th Terrace. NW 63rd Court was three homes to the west (left in the photo) and the west side of 63rd Court was W. 9th Court in Hialeah.
