The Bates Bible
I'm an atheist but I recognize the undeniable historical and literary importance
of the Bible, especially the King James Version. However I found reading the Bible
a rather painful experience because of all the chapter and verse numbering.
In 1936 Ernest Sutherland Bates published his edited version of the King James Bible.
All the numbering is removed, normal paragraph formatting is used, and a few of the
passages are rearranged. More controversially, Bates removed some of passages on
Judaic legal codes and genealogies. However, on the whole the Bates Bible was well
received. For me it has turned the Bible into an interesting reading experience
rather than an "assignment." I haven't read it cover to cover, but I've read way
more than I ever would have with a "chapter and verse" version.
I got my copy about 30 to 35 years ago. Unfortunately
the Bates Bible seems to be no longer in print.
