Several decades ago I read the first third of this book. I gave it up because I really couldn't
understand the psychological or sociological processes behind the rise of the Nazi regime. It
all seemed so alien to me. Rereading it now is a completely different experience. Recent events
in the United States (Trump, the alt-right, conspiracy theories, the January 6 insurrection) and
elsewhere in the world have shown that liberal democracy is very fragile indeed.

Beautifully photographed and uncomfortably thought provoking. One questions how things could have ever reached this point. There was an engaging article in The Atlantic a few years back that I think speaks to this: https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/01/two-party-system-broke-constitution/604213/

Lovely picture and light, and a timely comment on the world today

What the others have said, and I agree with your comment about our fragile liberal democracy - it seems like we're living on a knife-edge in these times and it would be so very easy to fall into the abyss of totalitarianism and dictatorship again...

I guess it is true that history repeats itself and we ignore that to our own peril.
I really admire this image and your amazing skill with light.
I would love to capture some of my collection but I feel I lack the skill.

Great shot. I haven't read it, but the whole state of politics and the ignorance of the Trump followers is scary for sure.

As you say, it would be an interesting read now. It doesn't seem so hard to understand with what we have seen in the US. v

A fine image and you're most definitely not alone in seeing the dangerous similarities.

A good history read Approximately six million Jews and some 5 million others, targeted for racial, political, ideological and behavioral reasons, died in the Holocaust. More than one million of those who perished were children Hitler was responsible for that.
Nice photograph of the book.

excellent photography, especially showing the volume emerging from the shadows, as seems to be happening also in current times and events..

An excellent closeup shot with lovely subtle soft light and shadows....haven't read it but could provide a great reading experience...V

I thought that book looked familiar from the thumb. I read it twice. Shirer's earlier work "Berlin Diary" is also quite good.

A fantastic shot Don! Recently I read a book about the rise of Mussolini and in it I noticed several similarities with current events...... I am concerned..... V

Well photographed. The reflection on the table and soft light are excellent. I am truly scared for the US especially at the next election if Trump runs and wins. I see the US turning into Gilead. V

Sad but true, fragile indeed.

We definitely live in a different world
where social media has a profound
influence on the outcome! Excellent
composition!

Excellent shot and even more excellent and sadly true notes. I am reading it again as well, for my third time although both other times were more than 30 and 45 years ago respectively. ~BV~

A big part of the problem is shown in your photo. No one seems to read anymore.

Trump's bible I suspect.

So sad that events in the US have contributed to your understanding of just how fragile democracy is. It's painfully clear that that's true, and I worry for the future of this country. Nicely captured as well.

Since the rise of Trump, et al, the same thoughts have occurred to me. Excellent shot. V
