Yes, Covid is terrible, but so far it pales in comparison to the 1918 pandemic.
Estimates vary, but total worldwide deaths are usually estimated at 50 million.
That was when the earth's population was about a quarter of what it is today.
The majority of those deaths occurred within the space of one year.

In comparison, the deadliest war in human history was World War II which caused 75 million
deaths (of which only 20 million were military personnel) over a six year period.

Scary stuff.

Here is a very interesting article about the impact of Barry's book in 2005:

I have a new respect for George Bush! I always thought he was kind of a bumbling idiot, looks like I was wrong. Seems like Covid is not the only thing that is going to take my country down. Hard times here in the good old USA. Wonder if we will ever change. Wish I could move to Canada.

We haven’t learned from the past. Politics seem more important these days.

History tends to repeat itself, unfortunately...

Bush was wise to suggest being prepared for the worst....there's a message for everyone there, and a clear course of action that politicians might finally act on with the lessons being learned during the current situation...

Looks like a worthwhile read, as was the article you linked to below. Too bad Bush's efforts weren't sustained.

I wonder how that would have gone if they had had better drugs, communications, testing, etc. like we have now. And it supposedly originated in Kansas, not Spain. If Trump had been president then, there probably would not have been a US by now. Thanks for turning me on to this.
