Nov 22, 2008 - When the temperature dipped overnight last night into the frigid range (low 20s) I was hoping to catch some of the beautiful ice formations that are known as Frost Flowers early this morning. They are a phenomenon that is seen only in the early winter and in the right weather conditions. And I wasn't disappointed. South of Shepherdsville, Ky., and the Salt River, I stopped at Cedar Grove Elementary along Cedar Grove Road where hundreds of these ice formations formed on plants along the road. I walked along the road, stopping every few feet to take pictures. Check them out here: http://www.pbase.com/dmdo/2008frost After an hour or so, I had worked my way back to the school property and was crouching on the ground to get the best angle when I noticed a white Explorer pulled into the school driveway. The driver -- a woman in her mid- to late-40s, it appeared, from where I was, 120-130 feet away -- stepped out of the vehicle and called out to me, "Here you go, buddy!" and gently dropped a bag by the driveway before driving off. In the plastic bag was a taco pizza from Taco Bell, a Zip-Loc bag of cherry tomatoes, another Zip-Loc bag of freshly cooked macaroni (still warm), some homemade cookies, a little container of tomato juice, and a 32-oz Gatorade. And a plastic spoon. I must've looked the part of a homeless guy wandering along the road to invoke this act of random kindness from this particular stranger. But, as a friend remarked, "How did she miss the expensive camera in your hand?" It goes to show there are still some very kind people out there. |
