Hi Dave,

Sorry for the delay in responding to your question. The image you asked about was taken within 6 to 10 feet of the butterfly and likely with the lens set to macro mode. I also use the lens with extension tubes which works well on these small subjects. I have used the Tamron lens for several years now and have been well pleased. I have a number of lenses, two other Tamron a 90 mm Macro and a 200-400 zoom telephoto. I also have several Canon lenses: 24mm, 35-135mm, 300mm f/2.8 is and 1.4 & 2x tele-extenders.

For birds, I either get really close (6 to 12 feet) with the 300mm lenses or digiscope using a Nikon Coolpix 990 and Leica APO 77mm spotting scope which can give me the equivalent of up to a 1000mm lens with eyepiece and camera optical zoom applied. With this system I can be as far away as several hundred feet and still fill a frame.

Hope this helps.

Dick

May I ask what your approx. distance on this was and was it at 300mm. Did you have any additional lenses on this or just the Tamron 70-300? I am thinking of buying a different lens than I just bought; a Tamron 28-300 macro, just think I made a wrong choice.

Thanks for any info
Dave
