28-09-07 the durian seller

The stall you see here is on the edge of Geylang, Singapores red light district. The area's a bit
edgier than other parts of singapore, and whilst I felt happy walking round the area with neck
strap displaying canon digital quite proudly, I did feel there were some areas where a photo
wouldn't have been met warmly. This was one of them, so it's a candid hip-shot. What you don't
see behind me is a 4 lane road, which masked the noise of the shutter nicely.

Durian's a tropical fruit found in south east asia (and probably other places I'm completely
unaware of. It is, quite frankly, possibly the most awful thing I've ever tasted. It's notorious
for it's strong smell, and taste. Basically you see the before and after shots here - the spikey
fruit, the before, the seeds and flesh in the plastic boxes. the after.

Basically the flesh feels like uncooked chicken breasts and has a similar texture to Brie or
Camenbert. But tastes of a mixture of fruit and onion. Certainly won't be forgotten in quite some time.

But some people really revere the fruit, in fact refer to it as the king of fruits. If you're
interested you can see more on it here!

I am glad I tried it though - all adds to the singapore experiance.

I wanted to try it when we were in Malaysia but didn't dare - I think the fact that the hotels had signs up saying that you were not allowed to take them in put me off a bit!
