Galileo discovered that as the temperature of a liquid increases, it's buoyancy decreases. The
thermometers use the Archimedes Principle (which states that a body immersed in a fluid is buoyed
up by a force equal to the weight of the displaced fluid) to measure temperature.

Personally I just think it looks good.
