OK the spots you can see over the photo are one of the issues the Impossible project has just
sorted out with the release of their second fim. The other, the loose lamination issue, has
blighted my pack of film too, with the back of the photo coming apart at the seams.
But, its the first pack of film I've shot with the new (old) SX-70 camera I bought recently. Its a
tough beast to handle too, the film is very difficult to work with, and a photo shot fairly close-
up will be subject to parallax error, so I have to compensate for this, by shifting the subject to
the left in the viewfinder. On top of this, the close focus is terrible, anything closer than a
metre and a half away results in soft focus....
Now a bit more detail on the film. I like it. It gives a strange colour caste, with sepia tones
coming through if you warm the print while developing (if you use the age old technique of putting
it under your arm. Aparently it has a blue caste too if you cool it down when developing). On top
of this, if the print is hit by any additional light while going through the development process,
the film tends to blow any highlights. As a result, you need to cover the print the moment it
leaves the camera. Next time, I plan to tape a thick envelope to the front of the camera to
prevent this from happening.
But on the whole, I'm impressed, this is the first attempt at a polaroid commercial product since
Polaroid ceased production. Plus the film whilst developing is the most beautiful cobalt blue
colour (although given some of the over-exposure issues, I probably shouldn't have been looking at it....).
This was the second photo I shot, which taught me not to get in so close, and also to cover the
photo faster once it was taken to save some of the detail in the shot.
