Orienteering Training Hikes

K9 handlers go through extensive training in many areas, including map and compass reading. After successfully completing a written test, handlers are given a series of hikes to do which puts their orienteering skills to a wilderness field test. The hikes are set up like scavenger hunts and require handlers to follow a designated route and be able to describe certain features such as trail markers, water sources, man-made objects, mines, dams, and natural features. Although some of the hikes require following trails, most have areas that require bushwacking off trail to get to another trail or elevation. Ramapo does its training hikes in Harriman State Park, New York. Lack of proper use of these skills may result in the K9 and handler spending the night in the park.
