Bounce Flash Comparison

These pictures were taken with bounce flash at about 4 pm on a cloudy, rainy day. The picture on the left looks as though it were taken at night because it looks dark out. The picture on the right looks like it was taken on a cloudy, rainy day. What made for the difference? Picture on the left was taken with settings f/5.6 and shutter speed 1/125 sec., ISO 100. Having a slower shutter speed allows the ambient daylight to be recorded. If you don't want your flash-fill pictures to look artificially dark in the background you must taken into account what sort of exposure you need to keep the background fairly accurately displayed (unless you want it to be dark). Of course, I still like the picture on the left better...but outdoors it looks unnatural to have such a dark background when it's still light out.

She doesn't run away, but she always squints after it goes off. How much can anyone like flash?

Yes, of course it would depend on the situation. In this case it was ok to have the dark background.
Does she mind the flash?

Judith, I prefer the one with the dark background too...but I was trying to make a point about considering the ambient light. Often flash fill is used outside for backlit shots and in the middle of the day and black background looks very fraudulent.

Interseting comparison. Personal pref. I guess, but I like the dark background better. The lighter one takes away from the subject. She sure has taken over that chair hasn't she?
