The structure in the back with the portrait of former president Mao
is the Gate of Heavenly Peace. The gate is divided into five doors
and can be reached via seven bridges accross a moat. Only the Emperor
could use the central door and bridge. From here Mao proclaimed the
People's Republic in 1949.
