Lockheed U2

Lockheed U2C Dragon Lady (high altitude spy plane).

It was developed in the 1950’s by Lockheed’s advanced research division (AKA Skunk Works) at the request of the US government for a plane that could sneak in the Soviet Union and find out what they were hiding (bombers, nuclear bombs, etc).
In 1955 the first prototype flew and its missions over the USSR started one year later.
Its was a slow airplane (just 450 mph /700 km/h) but flying at 70,000 feet high (20,000 meters) they thought the Russians wouldn’t catch it. However that changed on May 1, 1960 when they shot down the one flown by Francis Gary Powers and a monumental diplomatic mess happened afterwards.

Because of that, a “substitute” faster airplane was created: The SR71 Blackbird.

67 years after its first flight the U2 is still in service performing tasks on intelligence, search and rescue missions,
weather studies, upper air samplings, mapping and more.

I wanted to get the U2A version, I still haven’t found what I’m looking for 😁
