I was happy to be watching this young mink scamper down the edge of the road. Usually, they would never show themselves for very long. As I watched it, a mature Marsh Hawk swooped down on him in earnest. The mink seemed more startled than afraid, which confirmed my thoughts of it being a youngster.
The bird landed about 15 feet away and they just looked at each other before the mink started down the road, avoiding cover in the grass. Eventually he found the water he was looking for and slipped away. I really think the bird was trying to take him.Though the bird needs dinner too, I'm glad I did not have to witness a kill.
