Great Gray Owl Migration 2005

Photos from northern Minnesota of the Great Gray Owl migration into the state. Due to a lack of food these large owls have pushed south into MN looking for food. What a great opportunity for wildlife photos. I spotted 14 different Grays' in around 4 hours, if only I would have had more light!

2nd trip: 1/27/05 16 owls spotted but only one close until on my way home at dusk I caught one hovering over a grass hillside near a freeway entrance!

3rd trip 2/03/05 an amazing 44 owls located covering lots of ground from Sax Zim bog to Itasca state park!

These are some great shots, very sharp. There are a lot more Great Greys in the Duluth area than Bemidji where I live. So far I have only seen and photographed two over the course of many days.

Spectacular photos! I just returned from a weekend at Naniboujou Lodge on the North Shore of Lake Superior. We were fortunate to have spotted 10 Great Gray Owls north of Duluth on Highway 53 and then County 7. Thanks for letting me get an even closer look at these beautiful birds! Patrice

Cool Great Gray Owls. Fourteen in 4 hours is certainly an invasion. There are many up here in Ontario, Canada too but haven't managed to get real close to one yet like some have done.

Wonderful shots Dana. I was just recently on the north shore and was amazed at the large concentration of owls as well. I love the "dinner shot"! Got my vote. -Guy
