Portrait of a mullah in the village of Zhamak, which is the last major village in the Yazgulom valley. Like other mullahs from Zhamak, he has studied Islamic studies in Zahedan, in Sistan and Baluchestan Province, Iran.
About 6,000 people live in Yazgulom, in five different villages. Their language, Yazgulomi, is spoken nowhere else. Yazgulom's residents are Pamiri. The vast majority of Pamiris are Ismaili, but by contrast Yazgulomis practice the Sunni branch of Islam. Photo taken on July 13, 2016 in Zhamak, Yazgulom, Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province, Tajikistan.
