The intent here was to imply the size of the town in its heyday by showing the long street running into the distance that defines the extent of the town.
With the few remaining buildings on the street this shot is then a "defining" shot to give more of a sense of place and size.
It also expresses some of the forlorn quality of the place in that so many of the original buildings are missing...
