Construction #129

Marin Headlands, California

A tunnel which is part of "Construction #129" The trees grew from seeds carried in the truck tire treads from the Monterey area.

That is one of my favorite spots in the headlands and my favorite time to be there is when the weather is acting up as the drama enhances the quixotic presence of the now odd artifacts.

The whole place is a testimony to military folly with the best of intentions; every installation out there was obsolete shortly after it was built, some such as this one were obsolete even before they were completed, so the construction was stopped.

There's an interesting story it seems in this misty image. It's as if the trees are taking over again their once-lost domain, reclaiming for nature the returned silence from the abandonment by man of his former encroachment, with limbs raise in exultant victory.

The prominent tree is a thing of beauty here. The subtle greens of it's moss echoes into the distance, taking on a prominence accentuated by the red carpet of pine needles adding their nutrients to the rich soil.

That's a lovely shade of green that anywhere else would go nearly unnoticed.

This image feels like Ansel Adams with Dorthea Lang thrown in. There is a stylized romantic aspect to the view of the trees and the reality of the history of the place is present in the tunnel.
