I took the sample photo and applied Smart Sharpening 100%/.2 pixel, down-sized, applied the same USM, then sized to my final web size and applied a bit more USM,then faded it. This is about the best I could get this image to look. This is a reasonably close-range people photo...the original photo is over 5 megabytes, but the lens just doesn't deliver much fine detail...it's a pity they've used this so-so zoom lens with this camera.
