The 300mm f/4 AF-S has a certain "look" to its images wide open. Not that this is a great image, but I've shot this maple tree's leaves for a number of years in backlighting like this, and so I use it as a test-photo subject al the time. Focusing is surprisingly easy with the 300mm f/4 AF-S on the 20D. I can simply not fault the exposure with Minus 1/3 dialled in and a non-coupled lens attached--this is a good light metering peformance in this type of backlight.
